Welcome to my site! I'm just getting started, so there will be more to come... | | A few photos from my backyard feeders, followed by pictures at Kensington Park in Brighton, Michigan. There were so many beautiful woodpeckers out, and we were very surprised to see a family of bluebirds this far north in the winter! |
| | Finally, the first set of photos with my new Nikon D-40 and Sigma 50-500mm lens! Black-capped Chickadees, White-breasted Nuthatches, Downy Woodpeckers, and more! |
| | Even though it has been months since my trip, I realized I never finished posting all of my pictures. This set contains pictures from a drive up Estrada da Graciosa into the mountains, a visit to the beautiful Pousada Graciosa, and a wonderful hike on Trilha da Guaricica at an SPVS preserve. |
| | We went out on a beautiful fall morning for a bird banding demonstration by the Black Swamp Bird Observatory (www.bsbo.org). |
| | A much overdue second installment of photos from my birding trip with Luciano Breves, in and around Morretes, Parana, Brazil. We took a wonderful drive up into the mountains on Estrada das Prainhas along the Rio Nhundiaquara. Along the way, we stopped at the home of a very friendly couple...even from the road, we could see that hummers were swarming around the feeders placed on their windowsill. They graciously allowed us onto their property to photograph blue dacnis, green honeycreepers, and a multitude of hummers, including the festive coquette! It was a magical experience to be surrounded by these little feathered jewels. Afterward, we continued on to Luciano's preserved area up in the mountains. It is easy to see why he fell in love with this place. The natural beauty of this area is captivating, and I feel so fortunate to have visited his preserve with him! |
| | Photos from my first birding trip with Luciano Breves, in and around Morretes, Parana, Brazil. A drive up Estrada das Prainhas along Rio Nhundiaquara, a walk at Santuario Nhundiaquara at the base of Pico do Marumbi, and a quick trip to Antonina before sunset. My wildest imagination could not have prepared me for the beauty of the Atlantic Rainforest and the birds that inhabit it. Looking back at these photos...I still have the strange feeling of having woken up from the most wonderful dream that I never wanted to end. I hope to return again soon! |

In these areas, many researchers, educators, and conservationists work without the most basic equipment. The ABA addresses this need for equipment and educational tools and contributes to bird conservation through its Birders' Exchange program. Birders' Exchange takes new and used birding equipment and educational materials and matches it with local scientists, conservationists, and educators, in Latin America and the Caribbean. Find out more about this exciting program and how you can get involved by exploring the Birders' Exchange website now! An amazing trip!!! Photos will be coming soon...

*The list includes all birds seen...we heard many more species!!! | | Eastern meadowlarks were singing from every direction, but proved elusive to photograph. No sight or sound of the reported Western meadowlark in the area. A stop by another park on the way home brought nice looks at cedar waxwings and a great variety of dragonflies & damselflies. |
| | A picture perfect day in Pinckney, Michigan...couldn't get any better! I will work on identifying the dragonflies. Please zoom in on the photos for the full effect. :-) |
| | Pictures taken along my hike out to the floating bog at Waterloo Recreation Area, near Chelsea, Michigan. A good chance to test out what I learned in yesterday's nature photography workshop. Images were post-processed with Aperture 2.1.3. There were some great birds along the trail, including Cerulean Warblers, Black-throated Green Warblers, Acadian Flycatcher, Ovenbird, Veery, and Scarlet Tanager. |

On a quiet evening in my backyard, I noticed a soft chirping coming from the nest box, which grew much louder as the parents returned with beak-fulls of flying insects! I got my step-ladder out, climbed up, and lifted the lid to take a peek. Nestled inside were six tree swallow babies (I think I counted six beaks, but it's a bit hard to count with them piled on top of each other in every direction). Tree swallows usually fledge in 18-22 days. The exact age of these nestlings is unknown; however, based on their plumage, and the fact that they don't look that close to fledging, I'm estimating them to be approximately two weeks old. The parents are very busy keeping their little ones fed!!! One additional photo of a really beautiful sunset last night. I took this photo at a nature preserve located a few minutes from my house. A few of the birds that visit my yard...
